Zetas Celebrate Finer Womanhood

The Chi Theta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. celebrated its second annual Womanhood Week with a Women in Service Breakfast, March 13 at Tallahassee Community College. The speaker for the program was the Honorable Kathy Garner, the first black female judge in Gadsden County.

She told the audience, “Regardless of where you are, God will prevail.” She explained that Violette Anderson, the first African-American female to practice law before the Supreme Court, made it possible for her to dream. Renae Brown, first vice president of Chi Theta Zeta, presented Garner with the Violette Anderson Trailblazing Award.

Thometta C. Brooks, second vice president, presented the Women in Service Awards to Kristy Lee Goldwire, Capital Area Healthy Start Coalition; Yolanda Bogan, Florida A&M University Office of Counseling Services; Sandra King, Bond Community Health Center Inc.; Corine Mealing Stancil, Florida Department of Health Women’s Health; Cheryl Graham, Florida Department of Health’s Office of Minority Health; Kathy Lewis and Darnell Brooks, Leon County Health Department’s Office of Minority Health; Sylvia Hubbard, MAACA Inc.; Penelope Tiam-Fook, March of Dimes; and Kelly J. Smith, Ovarian Cancer Alliance of North Florida Inc.

The Outstanding Achievement in Community Outreach Award was presented to Shelia Morris. Lavonia Sampson- Jones presided over the program, and Rep. Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda presented a proclamation from the city of Tallahassee.

Other program participants were Genae B. Crump, president; Rachel Young, Area One coordinator; Dianne Williams-Cox, president of Tallahassee National Pan-Hellenic Council; Cynthia Gaines; Jahanna Daniels, Vessels of Worship Liturgical Dancer; Marquita Green and Alisha Bradley- Nelson, secretary.
